What are Term Time Hosts?
Term Time Hosts provide accommodation to students from Sark aged 13+ whilst they complete their secondary education in Guernsey. The student resides with their host during term time, returning to Sark for school holidays and on the weekends in the Summer, weather permitting.
Hosts provide accommodation, meals, laundry and transportation when needed but they are also there to offer emotional support and a safe and caring home-from-home for the student, enabling them to get the most out of their Guernsey education.
The Importance of Term Time Hosts
Sark provides excellent primary education for children up to 13 years of age. Sark students then attend schools in Guernsey which provide them the opportunity to broaden their horizons, build new friendships and continue their learning. Sark students rely entirely on Term Time Hosts to be able to live and study in Guernsey.
As Sark students begin their secondary education in Guernsey at age 13, the role of the Term Time Host is especially important for helping to support, encourage and comfort those students whilst apart from their homes and families. It is more than a service, it is a vital and valued relationship between host, student and their family in Sark.
Requirements of the Term Time Host
Term Time Hosts must be present throughout the school term time to provide the necessary service and support for the student. In the case of a couple, at least one of the hosts must be present.
To avoid disruption to the student's education, if the host has to take time away from the household the host should arrange for another adult to be in the home to provide support and supervision to the student.
Hosts receive an allowance for their service, paid monthly in arrears. Ideally, the host and student remain together until the end of the student’s education.
